Three days in Cagliari combine an old city, Poetto Beach and one genuine Sardinian experience

Cagliari is one of Sardinia’s most efficient short-break gateways. The airport train reaches the centre in minutes, the four historic districts are walkable and both Poetto Beach and Molentargius Park are accessible by bus. A city-and-sea trip therefore works without hiring a car on arrival.

The decision comes on day three. Chia, Villasimius, Barumini and Nora cannot form one realistic loop. Choose either another car-free day around Poetto, the Devil’s Saddle and flamingos, or one longer excursion that justifies a car or organised transfer.

The historic districts look close on a map, while Castello sits above the lower city. A beautiful lane can mean stairs, cobbles and difficult taxi access. Over a short trip, the highest-value base is often between the station, Marina and lower Stampace.

How do you reach central Cagliari from the airport?

Elmas Aeroporto station connects to the terminal through a covered walkway. Regional trains reach Cagliari Centrale at Piazza Matteotti in about five to seven minutes. The advertised average frequency is roughly twenty minutes and the current official single fare is €1.30.

Do not confuse Elmas Aeroporto with Cagliari Elmas station. Marina and lower Stampace are walkable from Centrale. Castello requires an uphill route or a targeted transfer with luggage.

Walk to Marina and Stampace; use a bus or taxi for a high Castello address.

Can you visit Cagliari without a car?

Yes for the centre, Poetto, Molentargius, Bonaria and much of the Devil’s Saddle. The current standard CTM ticket costs €1.30, lasts 90 minutes and covers the bus network excluding MetroCagliari. BusFinder provides stops and live information.

A car becomes useful for Chia, Tuerredda, Villasimius, Nora or a wider southern Sardinia route. For one remote day, compare a one-day rental with an organised trip after adding insurance and parking.

Mobility verdict: do not hire for all three days. Train, walking and buses cover two complete days; buy a specific solution only for the remote third day.

How should you combine Poetto and Molentargius?

Poetto is long enough for the experience to change by bus stop. Marina Piccola helps with Devil’s Saddle and Calamosca; farther sections provide more space and seasonal services. Check wind and sea state before choosing.

General Molentargius access is free. City-published hours vary by season, while official guided visits can enter selected protected areas and explain the saltworks. Binoculars improve an independent walk.
