Lyon offers two December trips: the intense Festival of Lights, or a calmer Christmas weekend
The Festival of Lights is announced for Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026. Place Carnot Christmas market is announced for 20 November to 24 December 2026. Visitors can therefore choose the event itself, with crowds, filtered access and expensive rooms, or another December weekend for the market, traboules, museums and bouchons with less pressure.

The decision in 30 seconds
Choose Festival dates when light installations are the main reason and crowds, walking and higher prices are acceptable. Choose another December weekend for a flexible food-and-culture break with the Christmas market.
Verdict: Part-Dieu is the most robust event base; Presqu’île is the most immersive but expensive and constrained. Outside the Festival, Presqu’île or Vieux Lyon become simpler.

Where to stay: choose the area before the hotel
During the Festival, location buys the ability to return without crossing the entire city after hours standing. A peripheral rate may become poor value.
Outside the event, compare Presqu’île, Guillotière, Part-Dieu and Croix-Rousse by restaurant access, station and calm rather than paying automatically for a postcard address.
Part-Dieu
Rail station, airport transport and metro make arrival easy. Less romantic, but effective when the centre is filtered.
Presqu’île
Close to routes, food and market. Book early, confirm hotel access and accept noise and crowds.
Vieux Lyon
Ideal for lanes and Fourvière, but event access changes. Plan luggage, cobbles and restrictions.
Croix-Rousse
Strong cafés and silk-worker identity with slopes. Stay close to metro line C.
During the event: ask the hotel for the exact station route, filters, check-in access and luggage storage. A general map is insufficient.
Getting there and moving around without a car
Rhônexpress links the airport and Part-Dieu; for several people, compare its total with the current train, bus and taxi choices. From Part-Dieu and Perrache, metro, tram and walking cover the trip.
Festival evenings bring pedestrian flows, station closures and controls. Use same-day TCL and official-event guidance, then follow a loop rather than repeatedly crossing Presqu’île.
- Airport: compare total group cost.
- Festival: carry little, charge the phone and set a meeting point.
- Funicular: useful for Fourvière when operating; check the relevant evening.
- Christmas market: Place Carnot by Perrache; combine with Confluence or Presqu’île.
- Car: unnecessary centrally and particularly constrained during the event.
Arrive by rail or airport transport. Leave the car outside the centre because restrictions, parking and crowds remove its value.
Day-by-day itinerary
Days remain modular. During the Festival, protect evenings for installations and lighten afternoons. Outside it, replace light routes with dinner, a guided walk or a cultural evening.
Presqu’île, Christmas market and first evening
Arrive, leave luggage and see Bellecour, Presqu’île passages and riverbanks. Avoid a large museum after a long journey.
Reach Place Carnot market, browse before buying and eat early. During the Festival, enter the perimeter with minimal belongings.
Follow an official loop through two or three major installations. Trying to see everything ignores queues and walking flows.
Rain / low-energy backup: Confluences Museum, Printing Museum or Presqu’île cafés. Outdoor works can remain effective in light rain with proper clothing.
Vieux Lyon, Fourvière and a second loop
Explore Saint-Jean and permitted traboules, then reach Fourvière by funicular or walking according to conditions. Respect residential buildings.
Choose the basilica, Gallo-Roman museum or another priority, then rest before evening. A proper break improves the Festival more than one extra sight.
Choose a different official zone and plan the return before entering.
Rain / low-energy backup: Gadagne museums, Cinema and Miniature, Lugdunum or a booked bouchon. Shorten the light loop in heavy rain.
Croix-Rousse, Halles Paul Bocuse or Confluence
Choose Croix-Rousse for slopes, murals and cafés, or Les Halles for a food circuit. The Halles are a showcase, not automatically the cheapest lunch.
Finish at Confluence, Parc de la Tête d’Or or a museum according to weather and departure. Allow extra luggage time during the Festival.
Depart or add a light dinner. A third complete light route rarely adds as much after two evenings.
Rain / low-energy backup: Fine Arts, Confluences or Institut Lumière; keep one large museum according to the train.
What to book and what to keep flexible
A food or history tour adds interpretation that walking alone cannot. During the Festival, avoid a long activity late in the afternoon.

The Festival changes accommodation and transport most. Installations are a major public spectacle, but scarce rooms and full restaurants raise the complete cost.

December can be cold, damp, foggy or windy. Festival evenings mean hours standing, so waterproof shoes, layers and gloves matter.
