Lanzarote is not simply Timanfaya plus beaches. Its character comes from the relationship between volcanoes, Atlantic weather, César Manrique’s architecture and a landscape shaped for farming. This ranking favours places that reveal that complete story rather than attractions with the largest photo galleries.

If you only have three days: keep Timanfaya, the Jameos–Cueva–Mirador northern trio, Papagayo and La Geria. Use the remaining time for the places that best fit your interests and forecast.

The ten best things to do in Lanzarote

1 Timanfaya National Park

Essential

Timanfaya is not a free-roaming crater hike. The main visitor experience at Montañas del Fuego combines geothermal demonstrations with a coach journey along the Volcano Route, an arrangement designed to protect a highly fragile landscape.

Why go: it is the island’s clearest and most spectacular volcanic story.
Best timing: your reserved slot, ideally early enough to keep the rest of the day.
Combine with: El Golfo, Los Hervideros, Janubio or La Geria.

2 Jameos del Agua

Art in lava

César Manrique transformed part of the La Corona lava tube without erasing its geology. Water, planting, natural light and an auditorium make this a subtle architectural visit rather than just a photogenic pool.

Why go: it explains Manrique’s fusion of art, tourism and landscape.
Time: allow 60–120 minutes.
Combine with: nearby Cueva de los Verdes.

3 Cueva de los Verdes

Lava tube

The guided route covers roughly one kilometre of the La Corona volcanic tube. Layered galleries, changing ceiling heights and the protected final “secret” make it one of Lanzarote’s most memorable visits.

Advance booking is essential: tickets are sold online for a fixed date and time. The route includes stairs and uneven passages and is not suitable for every level of mobility.

4 Papagayo beaches

Best coves

A sequence of pale coves cuts into Lanzarote’s dark southern coast. Playa de Papagayo is the famous one, but walking towards Playa Mujeres or Playa del Pozo often gives you more space and a better sense of the protected landscape.

Bring: water, sun protection and shoes; shade is scarce.
Access: conditions vary between the dirt road, walking routes and seasonal boat options.
Best advice: check wind before committing half a day.

5 Mirador del Río

Grand panorama

Manrique’s building almost disappears into the Risco de Famara cliffs. Its windows and terraces frame La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and the ocean as a deliberately composed landscape.

If low cloud closes the view, move this stop. In clear conditions, morning light often gives the most legible panorama.

6 César Manrique Foundation

Essential context

The artist’s former Taro de Tahíche home uses five volcanic bubbles as living spaces. More than any other site, it explains how Lanzarote developed a strong visual identity while resisting some of the architecture seen in larger resorts elsewhere.

Best for: architecture and modern-art enthusiasts—and anyone who wants to understand the island beyond its scenery.

7 La Geria

Volcanic wine

Each vine sits in a hollow dug into ash and protected by a curved stone wall. Stop at one or two bodegas, but give equal attention to the extraordinary working landscape between Uga and San Bartolomé.

A tasting never justifies risky driving. Choose a designated driver, a tour with transfers or a very limited tasting.

8 El Golfo, Los Hervideros and Janubio

Volcanic coast

These three stops create a logical west-coast sequence: the green Charco de los Clicos lagoon, Atlantic swell striking black lava cliffs and the geometry of the salt pans. Together they need a few hours, not an entire rushed day.

Safety: stay behind barriers at Los Hervideros. Swell and gusts can be much stronger than they appear from the car park.

9 Jardín de Cactus

Landscape design

Manrique’s final major island project occupies a former volcanic-ash quarry. Terraces, a windmill and thousands of cactus specimens create a compact stop that fits naturally into a northern day.

10 Teguise and Famara

Village and Atlantic

Start in the former capital’s stone lanes, then cross to Famara for a long walk beneath the cliffs. Sunday’s market transforms Teguise: arrive early for the event, or choose another day for a quieter old-town visit.

Our preference: late afternoon at Famara for space and light. Always obey flags and local guidance before entering the water.

Tours are most useful for Timanfaya, a combined northern circuit or La Graciosa. Teguise, the Cactus Garden and the Manrique Foundation are usually more flexible independently.

What is the most beautiful place in Lanzarote?

Timanfaya is the most iconic landscape. Choose Mirador del Río for a sea view, Papagayo for a beach and the César Manrique Foundation for the island’s most important cultural context.

Can you do all ten in three days?

Technically, perhaps; enjoyably, no. Select six to eight and group them by area. La Graciosa needs an additional day.

Which sights need advance booking?

Montañas del Fuego at Timanfaya and Cueva de los Verdes require a dated online booking. Booking Jameos del Agua and other CACT sites is sensible in busy periods.

What can you do for free?

Famara, Teguise outside the market purchases, El Golfo, Los Hervideros, many beaches and much of the La Geria landscape can be experienced without admission.

What should you prioritise without a car?

Take one combined tour for Timanfaya or the north, then use buses for Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen and the main resorts. Public transport serves towns more effectively than isolated natural sights.
