Three days are enough to see Lanzarote’s defining landscapes if you group the island by area. The most efficient plan gives one day to Timanfaya and the south-west coast, one day to César Manrique’s volcanic north, and one day to La Geria and Famara. With a car, this feels unhurried. Without one, choose a practical resort and replace part of the route with an organised tour.

A realistic three-day Lanzarote itinerary

Opening hours and ticket arrangements can change. Check the official Lanzarote Art, Culture and Tourism Centres before leaving and keep some flexibility for queues, cloud and strong wind.

Day 1 — Timanfaya, El Golfo and the southern beaches

Volcanoes · 90–120 km

Leave early for Timanfaya National Park. The main visitor route leads to Islote de Hilario, where the Route of the Volcanoes is covered on the official coach after entry. This is not a park where visitors can walk freely between craters. For regulated walking routes, consult the national park information.

Continue to El Golfo and Charco de los Clicos, then follow the coast towards Los Hervideros if access and sea conditions allow. Finish in Playa Blanca or at Papagayo. The Papagayo access track can be rough and local access arrangements may change, so check that your rental agreement is suitable.

Best start: before the mid-morning rush.
Lunch: El Golfo or Yaiza, rather than inside the park.
Drop if tired: Papagayo, especially in strong wind.
Total driving: roughly 2 hours 15 minutes from Puerto del Carmen.

Day 2 — Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río

North · 110–140 km

Give the second day to the north. Start with Cueva de los Verdes or Jameos del Agua, two very different experiences inside the same large lava-tube system. The cave focuses on geology and a guided underground route; Jameos is more about the meeting of nature and César Manrique’s architecture.

Continue to Mirador del Río. On a clear day the view over La Graciosa is worth the detour. If cloud completely hides the panorama, replace it with Haría or return earlier towards Teguise. Do not automatically book every northern centre—three well-chosen stops are enough.

Logical order: Cueva, Jameos, lunch, Mirador.
Allow: roughly 60–90 minutes for each major site.
Windy-day plan: cave, Jameos and the César Manrique Foundation.
Avoid: adding La Graciosa for a token two-hour visit.

Day 3 — César Manrique, La Geria and sunset at Famara

Art and wine · 75–105 km

Begin at the César Manrique Foundation in Tahíche to make sense of the architecture seen the previous day. If day three is a Sunday, continue to Teguise market; on other days the historic centre is calmer and still worth a walk.

Drive through La Geria, where vines grow in hollows dug into volcanic ash and protected by curved stone walls. Choose one winery rather than rushing between several, and keep time for Famara. If you drive, limit the tasting or nominate a driver who does not drink.

End at Famara. It is spectacular but exposed to waves and currents: come to walk, watch surfers and enjoy the evening light, not to promise everyone an easy swim.
