Car-free Cagliari is not a forced compromise. The airport train reaches the centre in minutes, Marina and Stampace are walkable from the station, and urban buses connect Poetto, Molentargius, Bonaria, Calamosca and access points near the Devil’s Saddle.

The difficulty begins with Chia, Tuerredda, Villasimius, Nora or Barumini. They can remain possible, while they require a properly checked regional service, an organised excursion or a one-day car. Over three nights, a few hundred metres matter. Marina and lower Stampace are walkable from Cagliari Centrale, close to buses and easy after dinner. Castello is beautiful, while a high address can mean repeated stairs after beach days.

How do you reach Cagliari without a car from the airport?

Elmas Aeroporto station is roughly a five-minute covered walk from the terminal. The official journey to Cagliari Centrale takes about five to seven minutes, with an advertised average frequency around twenty minutes. The current single fare is €1.30.

Select Elmas Aeroporto rather than Cagliari Elmas. Machines are available in the terminal and station, and Trenitalia sells the tickets. For a very early or late flight, the official taxi is the backup, with a current daytime minimum fare of €17 to the centre.

CTM tickets, buses and BusFinder

The current standard CTM ticket costs €1.30 and allows transfers for 90 minutes across buses, excluding MetroCagliari. A €2 ticket includes MetroCagliari for two hours. The €3.30 day ticket provides unlimited travel for 24 hours after first validation.

Tickets are available at CTM points, selected shops, machines and BusFinder. Onboard purchase includes a supplement and depends on time and stop rules. The app is the better default: it calculates routes, displays nearby stops and live times, and supports ticket purchase and validation.

Do not present Chia as an urban-bus extension. A service may operate on selected dates, while it does not provide Poetto-level flexibility. Check outbound, return, exact stop and final walk.

A protected reserve inside the city

Visit Molentargius without a car

The park covers about 1,600 hectares between Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena. General access is free for walking, cycling and birdwatching. Sali Scelti offers information, rentals and visits, while official guides enter selected protected areas.

A successful sighting depends on time, light and binoculars rather than a commercial promise. Flamingos are wild: they may be numerous, distant or absent from one precise viewpoint. Stay on routes and respect nesting areas.

Car-free becomes less efficient when you want several southern beaches or a wider island circuit. In that case, pay for one excursion or one-day hire. Do not sacrifice the simplicity of the whole stay for a few hours in Chia or Villasimius.
