One city day, one major beach and a final day matched to your energy

Chania makes western Crete look deceptively compact. The old harbour, Balos, Elafonissi, Falassarna and Samaria often appear on the same checklist, but each remote highlight can consume most of a day. A successful three-day trip needs one efficient base and one major excursion, not a race across the island.

The strongest structure is simple: day one in the Old Town and Nea Chora, day two at Balos or Elafonissi, then a flexible third day around a nearby beach, Aptera and Marathi, or Samaria for prepared hikers. You do not need a car when you stay near the centre and use a bus or organised trip for the longest day.

Our first-trip recommendation: stay between the central bus station and the Venetian harbour, walk on day one, book either Balos or Elafonissi, then keep the final day for Nea Chora, Agii Apostoli or a short excursion.

How should you divide three days in Chania?

Day 1

Old Town, harbour and Nea Chora

Start in Kastelli, Splantzia and Topanas, then reach the harbour. Save the lighthouse walk for late afternoon and add a swim at Nea Chora when the weather suits it.

Day 2

Choose one iconic beach

Pick Balos for lagoon scenery and Gramvousa, Elafonissi for a long beach day, or Falassarna for a simpler independent outing.

Day 3

Adjust the effort

Stay close for Agii Apostoli, rent a car for Aptera and Marathi, or replace the entire day with Samaria when you are fit and the park is open.

What does not fit comfortably: Balos, Elafonissi and Samaria in the same three-day stay. Each can require an early start and almost a full day.

You step straight into Chania’s strongest setting. Rooms can be small, reached by stairs and exposed to restaurant or bar noise.

Best city-and-sea balance

Nea Chora

The beach, fish tavernas and old centre remain walkable. It is often the most balanced area when you expect to swim every day.

Best for excursions

Around the central bus station

This area simplifies the airport bus, Elafonissi, Falassarna and organised pickups. The harbour remains walkable, though the setting feels more urban.

Quiet architecture

Halepa and Tabakaria

These neighbourhoods offer sea views and a residential atmosphere. They work better for travellers happy to walk or use a taxi for early starts.

Samaria Hotel

The hotel stands beside Chania’s central bus station and within walking distance of the harbour. The location is especially useful without a car and with early departures.

Before booking: check the walking route to the bus station, luggage access, night noise and the actual excursion pickup. A beautiful Old Town room may be awkward at 6 a.m.

CHQ to the centre

How do you reach Chania from the airport?

Chania International Airport uses the code CHQ. KTEL buses connect the terminal with Chania’s central bus station. Services follow the season and flight programme, so check the official timetable for your date.

The bus station is therefore a valuable reference point: it serves the airport and several western-Crete routes. Staying between it and the harbour makes an almost entirely car-free trip possible.

Usually the most economical option. Check the final departure and the walk from the station to your accommodation.

Late arrival or group

Taxi or transfer

A taxi can be rational after the final bus or when several people share the cost. Use the official rank and confirm the fare.

Flight to Heraklion

Use HER only when it materially improves the trip

Heraklion is too far away to be the natural gateway for three days in Chania. Compare it only when fare, timings or a wider Crete route justify the transfer.

Day 1

Old Town, Venetian harbour and Nea Chora

Begin in Kastelli and Splantzia before the lanes become busy. Continue through Topanas, Firkas Fortress and the maritime museum if the subject interests you. The Old Town rewards short loops more than a rigid landmark checklist.

Do not default to the first harbour terrace for lunch. Streets behind the waterfront often feel calmer and better value. Walk to Nea Chora afterwards for two or three hours by the sea, then return along the coast.

Keep the breakwater and lighthouse for late afternoon. The walk is free, exposed in midday sun and more rewarding as the light softens. Respect closures and slippery sections in rough weather.

Balos, Elafonissi or Falassarna?

Most dramatic scenery

Balos and Gramvousa

Choose Balos for lagoon views and the Gramvousa combination. The boat from Kissamos avoids the difficult final road, but the day still includes buses, waiting and sailing. Check included tickets and real time ashore.

Elafonissi

Elafonissi suits travellers who want several hours of swimming and shallow water. The road is long and winding; a tour or seasonal bus removes the driving, not the duration.

Simpler independently

Falassarna

Falassarna offers a broad beach, space and a strong sunset. KTEL publishes seasonal links from Chania, sometimes with a change at Kissamos. It is also easier to approach by car than Balos.

Three realistic plans for different energy levels

Car-free and relaxed

Agii Apostoli and the Old Town

Spend the morning around the small Agii Apostoli or Chrissi Akti bays, then return for lanes, cafés or museums missed on day one.

One-day car rental

Aptera and Marathi

Aptera adds archaeology and Souda Bay views; Marathi provides an easier Akrotiri swim. This combination is more balanced than another long west-coast crossing.

Very active

Samaria Gorge

Replace the full day with Samaria only when you are prepared for a long hike, a very early start and a return combining boat and bus.

A complete day in itself

Is Samaria worth one of only three days?

Yes when hiking is the main reason for your trip. No when the priority is the harbour, swimming and easy days. The complete crossing is long, rocky and demanding, with transport to Xyloskalo and a return from Agia Roumeli by boat and bus.

In 2026, the full park opened on 19 May after annual maintenance. Temporary closures remain possible because of heat, wind, rain or natural hazards. Check the current announcement and official NECCA ticket page before departure.

Choose Samaria: when you hike regularly, carry suitable shoes and accept a very long day.
Choose a shorter gorge: when you want walking without sacrificing the rest of the trip.
Skip it comfortably: when Balos or Elafonissi is already your main excursion.

Rent only when useful

Do you need a car in Chania?

No for the centre, Nea Chora and an organised excursion. A car becomes useful for Falassarna, Aptera, Marathi, Akrotiri or several remote beaches. On a three-day stay, one rental day is often more rational than keeping a car parked near the Old Town.

Do not rent automatically for Balos: the final road can be difficult, insurance details matter and the exposed walk remains. The boat from Kissamos removes the road problem, though the day becomes more structured.

Back streets and Splantzia often feel calmer. Look for vegetables, kalitsounia, lamb, fish and local wine rather than an oversized menu.

Chania works when one major excursion shapes the trip

The Old Town and Nea Chora already create a complete first day. Balos or Elafonissi supplies the major landscape. The final day should remain flexible: a nearby beach, Aptera and Marathi, or Samaria for prepared hikers.

Stay close to the centre and buses, prioritise CHQ Airport and rent a car only for the day that needs one. This structure delivers more of Crete than an itinerary spent chasing transfers.
