Two days on the ground are much better than a rushed Bari day trip when you want to understand Matera rather than only photograph it. Day one explains the Sassi, adds one cave-house interior and keeps you in town for evening light. Day two goes deeper into Sasso Caveoso and, when conditions are dry, crosses the ravine towards Murgia Timone.
The right format: arrive before lunch, spend at least one night in Matera and leave late the following afternoon. Two nights are even better when your Bari connections are poor or you want to keep Murgia Timone flexible around the weather.

Do not judge the day from one weather icon. A short 15:00 shower does not ruin Matera. Several hours of rain before a Murgia Timone hike are different: trail 406 becomes a much less attractive plan. Keep day two flexible.
What to pack
Shoes with real grip, a light waterproof jacket, a warmer evening layer and a compact day bag. Smooth-soled shoes are a poor choice even on a sunny forecast. Matera has enough gradient that footwear matters more than dressing smartly during the day.
How to reach Matera without a car in October
Bari is the logical gateway, with its airport roughly 50 km from Matera. From Bari Centrale, Ferrovie Appulo Lucane publishes rail timetables and any replacement coach services towards Matera. Weekends, public holidays and engineering work can change the normal pattern, so check the board for your exact travel date rather than relying on an old timetable.
If you are already staying in Bari and do not want to spend the night in Matera, you can plan a car-free Matera day trip from Bari. An early departure and a carefully chosen return connection can leave roughly five to seven hours in Matera, enough for both Sassi, one indoor visit and the main viewpoints.
Why staying overnight changes Matera: many day visitors leave by late afternoon. Spending the night gives you low light, dinner inside the Sassi and a quieter following morning. Here, extra time without a transport deadline is often worth more than another paid attraction.
For a longer southern-Italy itinerary, Bari and Lecce offer two very different bases for the next stage. Bari is much easier for Matera; Lecce makes more sense as a separate stage towards Salento.
Where to stay in Matera in October: Sassi or Piano?
“Near the centre” is not enough information in Matera. Two hotels 400 metres apart can require completely different luggage effort. The real decision is between the Sassi experience and the practical Piano.

The easiest compromise between a cave-room atmosphere, evening restaurants and climbing back towards Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Still check the exact final steps from the drop-off point.

Around Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via del Corso, luggage is easier and Matera Centrale is closer. You simply walk down into the Sassi afterwards.

The property also makes the practical point that the Sassi are a limited-traffic zone and offers shuttle help from selected partner garages when guests arrive by car.
Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita: make the night the main experience
Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita occupies Civita and faces the Murgia. The project includes cave rooms and an ancient church used as a shared space. Rates can sit far above a normal room, so it is coherent only when sleeping in a carefully restored cave is a central part of the trip.
Piano: where we would save
When budget matters more than the cave-room experience, compare stays around Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Major viewpoints remain minutes away, but arriving and leaving with luggage is much easier.
Our choice: one night → Sasso Barisano when budget allows. Two nights → Piano becomes more attractive if the saving buys a better dinner, a guided walk or simply more transport flexibility.
2-day Matera itinerary in October
Day 1 — understand the Sassi before getting lost in them
10:30–11:00 · Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Begin on the Piano above Sasso Barisano. The first viewpoint gives essential vertical context: some apparent “streets” are roofs, terraces or passageways built above spaces cut into the rock.
11:00–12:30 · Descend into Sasso Barisano. Follow Via Fiorentini and smaller lanes towards Sant’Agostino without obsessing over the shortest route. UNESCO describes the Sassi and rupestrian-church park as a system of more than a thousand dwellings plus churches, monasteries and hermitages integrated into the Murgia terrain.
12:30–14:00 · Simple lunch. Matera rewards one chosen restaurant more than five snacks eaten on the move. In October, reserve Saturday dinner or a particularly busy weekend; lunch can remain flexible.
14:00–15:00 · Casa Noha. This is the indoor stop we would choose for context on a first visit. FAI presents Matera’s history through a 30-minute multimedia experience. For October 2026 the announced opening is Thursday–Tuesday, 10:00–19:00, with last admission one hour before closing; displayed adult admission is €7.
That half-hour matters because the Sassi should not be reduced to a romantic backdrop. Living conditions, the mid-20th-century relocation of residents and later rehabilitation are central to understanding what you are looking at.
15:00–16:30 · Cathedral, Civita and Sasso Caveoso. Cross the cathedral area and descend gradually towards Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. Do not force Murgia Timone into day one: keeping the first day inside Matera makes the city easier to read.
16:30–evening · Viewpoint and dinner inside the Sassi. Pick a belvedere close to your accommodation and remain until lights begin appearing. October sunset comes early enough that this does not force a very late dinner.

Day 2 — Sasso Caveoso, one cave house and Murgia Timone when the ground is dry
08:30–10:00 · Sasso Caveoso before groups arrive. Return around Piazza San Pietro Caveoso and climb towards Santa Maria de Idris. Even without entering every rupestrian church, this side of Matera feels more mineral and open to the Gravina than Sasso Barisano.
10:00–10:45 · Visit one cave house. A reconstructed domestic interior makes the density of historic life easier to understand. There is no need to visit three; one well-presented cave house is enough before returning to the city itself.
11:00–14:00 · Dry-weather option: trail 406 towards Murgia Timone. The route descends from the Porta Pistola area, crosses the Gravina on a footbridge and climbs to the plateau. This is not a tiny urban stroll: carry water, wear proper shoes and skip it after substantial rain.
In 2026, Murgia Timone access is now managed around a visitor centre and ticketing system. The park’s own visitor information highlights the practical detail car-free travellers need: there is currently no public transport line connecting Matera with the Jazzo Gattini visitor centre. Trail 406 is therefore the independent option in good conditions; otherwise use a transfer, taxi or organised visit.
Rain option: stay on the Piano. Palazzo Lanfranchi, the archaeological museum, another indoor visit or a long lunch are better decisions than a soaked hike. With two nights, move Murgia to the following morning.
15:00–16:30 · Final loop and departure. Return towards Piazza Vittorio Veneto, collect luggage and climb to Matera Centrale or your coach stop. Keep at least 30 minutes of buffer: the final 500 metres always feel longer after two days of stairs.
