A car gives you the greatest weather freedom. You can leave a clouded viewpoint, follow a brighter coast and return later. It also lets you stop between headline sights, where the island often reveals its strongest contrasts. In exchange, mountain roads can be wet, narrow or fogbound. You must be willing to turn back when poor visibility makes driving uncomfortable.

Guided tours are the strongest car-free alternative. Two thoughtfully chosen days — a western route around Sete Cidades and an eastern route around Furnas and Nordeste — reveal the structure of the island. The centre between Portas da Cidade, Mercado da Graça and the waterfront is the straightforward choice for a first stay. Dinner is walkable, operators can offer nearby pickup points and the airport is close. The drawback is street noise and difficult parking around some historical accommodation.

São Roque and the eastern waterfront appeal for sea access and proximity to Pópulo, but depend more on buses, taxis or a car. With a rental, choose a property that describes parking precisely. “Parking available nearby” may mean a nightly search, not a reserved space.

Before each departure: inspect cloud cover, webcams and trail alerts. If Vista do Rei is white on day two but Furnas is clear, swap the days. No itinerary written months in advance is more useful than the morning visibility.

Day 1

Ponta Delgada, the market and a first reading of the island

Begin at Portas da Cidade, then cross the centre to Mercado da Graça. The morning gives you an edible map — pineapples, cheese, fish and seasonal fruit — before the driving days. Continue to Forte de São Brás and the waterfront. Notice the distances: the airport feels close, but the craters that organise the island remain hidden from the city.

Choose one afternoon addition: Jardim António Borges, a pineapple plantation accessible from town, a museum or whale watching if sea conditions and the operator allow it. Do not place a boat trip immediately after a flight that may be delayed. At dinner, try straightforward Azorean cooking and review the next two days’ weather rather than defending the original sequence.

Day 2

Sete Cidades, crater lakes and sunset at Mosteiros

Leave when webcams show a clear window. Vista do Rei provides the classic reading of the caldera, but it is not worth waiting two hours inside cloud. Continue towards Lagoa do Canário and whichever viewpoints are safely accessible, then descend to Sete Cidades village. The change of scale — ridge to lakeshore — turns a panorama into an inhabited landscape.

In the afternoon, reach the western coast. The natural pools and Mosteiros islets create a sterner scene than the caldera and are especially beautiful in low light. Swimming depends on swell and supervised areas; black volcanic rock never guarantees a safe sea. Return by a different road when visibility allows, without adding every signed miradouro.

Day 3

Lagoa do Fogo, Ribeira Grande and the north coast

Lagoa do Fogo looks close on the map, yet its ridge creates a private climate. Climb only when visibility and current access arrangements make sense. Shuttle systems or restrictions may vary by season; use official information. If the panorama is open, look into the caldera before deciding whether to walk. Do not descend a wet trail in unsuitable shoes merely because it appears in an old travel post.

Ribeira Grande then supplies a real town, volcanic-stone architecture and a lunch stop. Continue according to your priorities: a tea plantation, Caldeira Velha with any required reservation, or the coast. This central day is easier to adjust than the long Furnas loop. When the heights close, start in town and try the lake later.

Day 4

Furnas: geothermal landscape, garden and thermal bath

Furnas should not be reduced to fumaroles photographed in ten minutes. First understand the valley and its springs, then choose among the lakeside, village and a thermal garden. Cozido cooked with geothermal heat is as much a cultural experience as lunch; reserve with a restaurant that explains its service rather than assuming every kitchen offers the same preparation.

A bath at Terra Nostra or Poça da Dona Beija takes time. Changing, showering and resting belong to the experience, while iron-rich water can mark light-coloured swimwear. Do not add Nordeste on the same day if you want to enjoy the garden. Furnas is one of the island’s better moderate-rain days; under a severe warning, no hot spring justifies a risky drive.

Day 5

Nordeste, Ribeira dos Caldeirões and the buffer day

If the first four days worked, head towards Nordeste. The mills, waterfall and park at Ribeira dos Caldeirões introduce a wetter, greener coast. Continue to a few viewpoints rather than all of them: distances grow and the roads invite a slower pace. A picnic preserves flexibility, provided you use designated areas and take waste away.

If cloud cost you a crater day, use day five as a second chance. This is the itinerary’s most important decision. Nordeste is beautiful, but finally seeing Sete Cidades may matter more on a first visit. Without a car, keep the day for a second tour, a rescheduled boat departure or Ponta Delgada. Margin is not empty time; it stops weather from deciding the whole journey.

“Changeable” is not travel-writing shorthand here. Relief pushes humid air onto the ridges while the two coasts can experience different conditions. A forecast for Ponta Delgada does not describe Vista do Rei. Use a local source, look at webcams and keep a waterproof layer accessible even when the morning begins in sunshine.

Trails can close after landslides, for maintenance or because of a temporary danger. Consult the official Azores Trails alerts on the day. A GPS trace or old article never reopens a closed path. Shoes with grip, water, a warm layer and a charged battery remain sensible on a short walk.
