In Germany and Austria, a textile-free Saunawelt is often a sauna and hygiene rule rather than a naturist resort in the holiday-club sense. The Roman-Irish circuit moves through warm rooms, steam, thermal baths and cooling stages in a prescribed sequence. You do not come here to roam freely between twenty whirlpools; the ritual is the experience.

The 2026 rule is simple and non-negotiable: no swimwear Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; swimwear mandatory Wednesday and Saturday. Admission is €39, towels and slippers are included, minimum age is 14, and under-18s need an accompanying adult. The bath closes on 24 and 25 December. For a first-timer, the structure can actually make nudity easier. Everybody follows the same ritual and rules, so there is less uncertainty about what to do next. If you want outdoor pools, an all-day lounging resort or dozens of facilities, however, choose elsewhere.

Best stay: two nights in the thermal quarter

Baden-Baden works very well without a car. If bathing is the purpose of the break, Aqua Aurelia Suitenhotel is unusually well matched: Friedrichsbad is roughly five minutes away on foot and Caracalla is linked to the hotel by an underground passage. That makes it easy to pair the historic nude ritual with a conventional swimsuit thermal spa on day two.

AQUA DOME, Tyrol: spectacular in winter, but know exactly where nudity starts

Längenfeld’s circular outdoor bowls are probably the most visually compelling pools in this entire guide. They use thermal water, sit beneath the mountains and look particularly dramatic in snow. They are not naturist pools. Nudity begins in Sauna World, a textile-free zone where bathing clothing is prohibited and access starts at age 15.

Thermen Bussloo: in the Netherlands, the ordinary day is textile-free

Bussloo belongs here because nudity is not confined to three sauna cabins. Its house rules are explicit: swimwear is not allowed on ordinary days. The recurring winter exceptions are the second and last Tuesday of each month, when swimwear becomes mandatory for the entire day. For visitors used to clothed spas, this reversed default is essential information.

The resort opens 09:00–23:00 and full-day admission currently starts from €53 per person; advance reservation is mandatory. Slippers are required around the resort but not inside saunas, robes are expected in restaurants and relaxation spaces, and phones/cameras are restricted to protect privacy. Thermen Berendonck: one night can unlock two full wellness days

Berendonck follows Dutch sauna culture but packages it as a more luxurious overnight escape, with a five-star hotel directly connected to the wellness resort. Every Wednesday and the last Sunday of the month are swimwear days; choose a different date if textile-free wellness is the point of the trip.

Winter suits the resort: wood-fired saunas, hot pools, cold gardens, fireplaces and even winter lake swimming for guests who enjoy the contrast. Again, this is a high-end sauna/wellness resort, not a natural geothermal spring.

Therme Erding: huge and genuinely thermal, with nudity concentrated in Vital & Sauna

Therme Erding is almost a destination in itself. Its Vital & Sauna zone is textile-free and restricted to age 16+, with dozens of sauna and steam experiences. The wider complex uses recognised thermal water, but the worlds must be kept separate: guests cross areas where swimwear remains necessary before entering the textile-free zone, so keep a swimsuit, robe or towel available for transitions.

The 2026 tariff page displays €62 for a weekday full-day Vital & Sauna ticket and €69 on weekends, Bavarian public holidays and school holidays, plus an €8 “use of sauna” supplement in the current pricing presentation. Waer Waters near Brussels: dressed and undressed zones on the same day

Waer Waters solves a very practical couple problem: what if one person loves textile-free wellness and the other is unsure about spending ten hours nude? There is no need to select a dedicated “naturist day.” The resort operates separate worlds every day: Unite and Zen are dressed, while Re-energize is the undressed zone, with an outdoor Norwegian sauna concept, pools, natural swimming pond, whirlpool, saunas and relaxation areas.

The facilities are not identical across the two worlds, so bring swimwear if you want to experience the full resort. Claudius Therme is the easiest option when the spa should fit inside a normal city break. It uses mineral thermal water, opens daily from 09:00 to midnight and sits in Cologne, making rail and flight access much simpler than an Alpine valley.

The dress code must be understood before you enter: swimwear is mandatory in the thermal/bathing area and prohibited in the sauna area. The floating pool is an exception and can be used with or without swimwear. Outside the saunas, a robe or towel is required. A thermal + sauna day ticket costs €44.50 on weekdays and €47.50 on weekends/public holidays.

This makes Claudius an excellent introduction to German textile-free sauna culture, not a full naturist resort. For accommodation, you do not need another spa hotel: compare stays in Cologne-Deutz or near the Rhine so the spa, central sights and station all remain convenient.

What to pack: less than a beach holiday, but more than one towel

• Phone: assume it stays away. Bussloo and Berendonck ban photography and heavily restrict or prohibit electronics in wellness areas, protecting both peace and privacy.
• Reservation: Bussloo and Berendonck require advance booking. AQUA DOME encourages online tickets to guarantee admission. Huge spas can still reach capacity on winter weekends.
• Hydration: use the dedicated water points and check bottle rules. Repeated hot/cold sauna cycles for eight hours are not the same as an hour in a pool.

Getting there from Europe without a car: which spas are genuinely easy?

A winter spa can look inexpensive until a rental car and a two-hour drive are added. For a one- or two-night break, access matters almost as much as the entry ticket, so we favour places that can realistically be reached by rail and local transport.
