Where to Stay in Trapani for the Egadi Islands: Port, Old Town or Beach

In Trapani, the best accommodation is not necessarily the room closest to the sea. When Favignana, Levanzo or Marettimo drives the itinerary, the useful address is the one that lets you walk to the hydrofoils while keeping restaurants and evening streets nearby.
The port side of the historic centre offers the strongest balance for three nights. The port itself works for a short stop or a very early sailing. Mura di Tramontana gives you a more maritime atmosphere without leaving the old town. San Giuliano only becomes the better choice when beach time matters more than ferry departures.
The safest search area: look between Via San Michele, Via Torrearsa, Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the part of the centre that remains within roughly fifteen minutes on foot of the Liberty Lines terminal.

Where should you stay in Trapani?
Historic centre, port side
This is the best compromise between boats, restaurants, old streets and evening walks. You can return from an island, change and go out for dinner without another transfer.
Port and San Pietro
Put logistics first. A room five or ten minutes from boarding removes the taxi and reduces the margin required in the morning.
Mura di Tramontana
The northern side of the old town gives you the sea, walls and a softer mood. Check the actual walking route to the hydrofoil terminal before paying.
San Giuliano
Choose this area for several swimming days or a family stay. You will rely more on a bus or taxi whenever you need the port.
Erice, Paceco or Nubia
These bases open up the salt pans, Marsala and western roads, but complicate each ferry day. They work when the Egadi Islands are only one part of the trip.

The booking test: open the walking route to the Liberty Lines ticket office on Via Ammiraglio Staiti. A vague “central Trapani” label is not enough.
The historic centre on the port side
This area turns Trapani into a destination rather than a terminal. You keep the lanes, churches, pastry shops, Corso Vittorio Emanuele and evening restaurants, while reaching the boat with a beach bag instead of a taxi booking.
For a first stay, search around Via San Michele, Via Torrearsa, Via Garibaldi, San Pietro and streets that connect quickly to the quay. The shortest address is not automatically the best: an extra five minutes may buy a much calmer and more attractive street.
Hotel San Michele
The property sits on a quiet street in the historic centre and describes the harbour as about a five-minute walk away. Reception, air conditioning and location make it a strong fit for ferry days.
Check: final price, exact room, cancellation terms and parking arrangements when arriving by car.
Check four practical details
Air conditioning, floor, lift and noise reviews matter more than a few extra square metres. Historic buildings can be beautiful but awkward with a large suitcase.
Mura di Tramontana: sea views without leaving the old town
Mura di Tramontana runs along the northern face of the historic centre. It is the most attractive area for sunset walks, a sea-facing room or a couple’s trip. You remain central, but the mood feels less port-oriented and more coastal.
The mistake is measuring only the distance to the water. The port walk still matters. A room around Piazza Mercato del Pesce works well; accommodation near the far end of the peninsula can mean a longer morning walk with bags.
Residence La Gancia
The residence sits near the urban beach and historic core, with apartments, air conditioning and a terrace over the bay. It works for travellers who want more space without giving up the walk to the port.
San Giuliano only wins for a beach-led stay
San Giuliano stretches north-east of the centre along the coast. It suits families, stays of four nights or more and travellers who want to walk to a proper beach. Accommodation can feel more residential and may offer more space.
For an Egadi day, however, you must return to the terminal. Urban lines 21 and 23 link the terminal, San Giuliano seafront and the cable-car area, but the timetable must fit the actual sailing. A taxi may be safer than a tight bus connection before an early boat.
San Giuliano works when: you want several beach days, one Egadi excursion and enough time to accept the journeys. For a two- or three-night Favignana-focused trip, stay near the port.
Erice, Paceco and the salt pans are visits, not ferry bases
Erice offers a mountain setting, medieval streets and exceptional views over Trapani. The cableway reaches the summit in roughly ten minutes when operating, but its lower station lies outside the historic centre. Staying in Erice adds several stages before each island departure.
The Trapani and Paceco salt pans begin immediately south of the city. The WWF-managed reserve protects a working and natural landscape where summer salt harvesting can still be observed. Nubia and Paceco make peaceful road-trip bases, not places from which to walk to the hydrofoils.
Keep Trapani as the base
Reach Erice by bus and cableway, then use a tour or taxi for the salt pans. You avoid changing hotel and keep the ferry terminal walkable.
Expand towards Nubia or Paceco
Parking, the salt pans and the road to Marsala become simpler. Check where the car will stay during an island day.
Favignana, Levanzo or Marettimo?
All three leave from the same port, but they create different days. Timetables and stopping patterns vary with season and sea conditions, so use the official Liberty Lines search before tying the island to another non-refundable activity.
Favignana
The largest and best-connected island is the easiest introduction. A bicycle or scooter reaches several coves, but heat, wind and distance matter. Cala Rossa is dramatic but rocky; a boat tour makes several bays easier to experience.
Levanzo
The smallest island has one compact village at Cala Dogana and no real carriage roads. It suits a slow day, coastal walking or a pre-booked visit to Grotta del Genovese.
Marettimo
The furthest and wildest island attracts hikers and boat lovers. On a short trip it consumes more time and depends more heavily on sea conditions. An overnight stay gives it the space it deserves.
Hydrofoil plus bicycle
Book the official return, arrive with time and choose no more than two or three coves. This leaves more space for the village and avoids a fixed programme.
Favignana and Levanzo by boat
An organised cruise works when swimming and coves matter more than cycling. Check boat size, time ashore, marine-area fees and the exact departure point.
Do not put your only Egadi day on the same day as your return flight. A sea or timetable change can remove the margin. Keep at least one evening in Trapani after the excursion.
Should you stay in Trapani or Favignana?
Trapani remains the stronger choice for a first trip of two to four nights. Accommodation and restaurants are more varied, airport transfers are easier and you can switch islands when weather changes.
Favignana becomes better when you want the island early and late in the day, several coves without watching the last boat and at least two nights on the island.

Should you fly into Trapani or Palermo?
Trapani-Birgi Airport, code TPS, is the logical choice when a direct flight fits your dates. Airgest’s official transport page lists buses towards Trapani, Palermo, Marsala and other western Sicilian destinations. Check the actual connection before locking a non-refundable room.
Palermo Punta Raisi, code PMO, often offers more flight options. It can still work for Trapani, but the transfer becomes a major part of the trip. A late arrival may require a private transfer or a first night in Palermo.

The ground journey is shorter and the trip remains focused on Trapani. Confirm the bus that matches your arrival.

What is the best area without a car?
The historic centre on the port side. Ferries, restaurants and evening walks remain accessible on foot.
