How do you reach central Catania from the airport?
AMTS Alibus connects Fontanarossa Airport with the centre, railway station and useful stops. The official ticket currently costs €4 and remains valid for 90 minutes across other urban AMTS services. It can be bought onboard by card or cash, through the app or from retailers.
Use the stop nearest the accommodation rather than automatically leaving at Centrale. Check the current AMTS route for Piazza Duomo, Stesicoro or Via Etnea. With four people or a very late arrival, compare an official taxi or hotel transfer.
Before landing
Save the address and stop. Historic-centre lanes can make the final walk slower with luggage.
During the stay
Walk in the centre. Use buses or metro for Borgo, Centrale and selected districts.
For day trips
Train for Syracuse or Taormina-Giardini, bus for the coast and guided transfer for Etna. Recheck the day before.
Which Mount Etna trip should you choose from Catania?
A 1,900–2,000 m trip normally explores lateral craters, lava fields, a cave and sometimes a tasting. It suits a first visit, costs less and may leave the evening free. Official Funivia 2500 rises from Rifugio Sapienza to 2,500 m. Tour 3000 adds 4×4 transport and a short walk with a volcanological guide to the authorised level.
In July 2026, official listed prices are €54 for the 2,500 m cable car and €82 for Tour 3000. Prices, permitted altitude and routes can change with weather and volcanic activity. A Catania tour may not include the cable car; read the inclusions precisely.

What should you eat in Catania?
Pasta alla Norma, arancini, cartocciata, cipollina, fish, granita and pastries make it easy to eat well without reserving every meal. Pescheria gives the best context in the morning, while restaurants immediately around it vary in value.
Keep lunch quick on the Etna day, choose one fuller dinner on the first evening and use the coast for fish or aperitivo on day three. Horse meat is part of local popular food culture but is obviously not required to experience Catania.
