Many European Christmas markets close on December 23 or 24. That is not much help if your time off starts after Christmas Day.

There are, however, several cities where the main Christmas market is still open after December 25, 2026 — in some cases all the way to January 6, 2027. Prague and Tallinn keep their flagship markets running into the first week of January, Vienna still has Schönbrunn and the Prater, Brussels continues until January 3, and Colmar gives you a few valuable days after Christmas before its six traditional markets close.

The important point is that dates vary not only from city to city, but from one market to another within the same destination. So this guide starts with the question that actually matters: where can you still go for a proper Christmas-market break on your exact dates?

Before you choose: look at room prices at the same time as transport. Between December 29 and January 2, the difference between two cities can be much larger for accommodation than for the flight or train.

The closing date only tells part of the story. In Prague and Tallinn, the flagship market you are travelling to see is still there. In Vienna, several classic Advent markets have already finished, but Schönbrunn continues. In Colmar, the full Christmas-market experience ends much sooner.

1 · Best all-round choice

Prague: the safest bet after Christmas

For a trip between Christmas and Epiphany, Prague is the easiest city in this list to recommend. The Old Town Square market is scheduled through January 6, 2027, and Wenceslas Square also remains part of the festive season into the new year.

Some smaller Prague markets close earlier, so after Christmas it makes more sense to build the evening around Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square rather than trying to tick off every market in the city.

Why Prague works so well after December 25

The biggest advantage is geography. From Old Town Square you can walk to Josefov, the Powder Tower, Charles Bridge and the Vltava riverfront without turning the day into a transport plan. Wenceslas Square then pulls you naturally towards New Town.

That means you can spend the daylight hours seeing Prague properly and return to the market when the lights come on. The market adds to the city rather than having to carry the whole trip.

Choosing an area

Nové Město for balance, Staré Město for atmosphere

Staré Město puts you right in the middle of the evening atmosphere, but prices and street noise can be higher. Nové Město keeps Wenceslas Square close and usually opens up more options. Vinohrady is worth considering if you do not mind a short tram or metro ride.

Prague Castle fits neatly into the daytime

The castle is a natural daytime counterpoint to the market. If you want to see St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane, allow a good half-day before walking back towards Malá Strana and the centre.

2 · Strongest winter atmosphere

Tallinn: the most atmospheric choice

Tallinn offers a different kind of trip. Its Christmas market sits on Raekoja plats, Town Hall Square, right in the middle of the medieval Old Town. For 2026, the official calendar runs from November 20, 2026 to January 6, 2027.

You do not need a long list of separate markets here. The appeal is the way the square, cobbled lanes, walls and church towers all belong to the same compact historic centre.

Why choose Tallinn over Prague?

Choose Tallinn if atmosphere matters more to you than the number of major sights. Prague is bigger and more monumental. Tallinn is smaller, quieter and much more northern in character.

Snow is never guaranteed, and it would be misleading to promise a white Christmas postcard. Even without it, the short days, medieval streets and early evening lights give Tallinn a very distinctive winter mood.

Two or three nights are enough. In cold weather, it helps to alternate outdoor walks with cafés and museums rather than planning one long day entirely outside.

Staying inside the Old Town keeps almost everything within walking distance, though cobbles and pedestrian streets are worth remembering with luggage. Rotermann is very close, more modern and convenient for transport.

A short walking tour can be useful on a first visit

Tallinn's Old Town is easy to walk independently, but a guided tour can add context if you know little about the city's history. In around two hours, it is possible to connect Town Hall Square, Toompea, sections of the walls and several viewpoints without losing half the day.

The main drawback: getting there

Depending on where you start, Tallinn can cost more to reach than Prague, Brussels or Vienna. Compare return transport + baggage + airport transfer + accommodation, not just the room rate.

Verdict: Tallinn is our pick for atmosphere. For a couple looking for two or three wintery nights in early January, it can easily beat Prague.

3 · Best cultural city break

Vienna: excellent after Christmas, but choose the right market

Vienna is where vague advice such as “the Christmas markets stay open into January” becomes dangerous. Some do. Many do not.

The main Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz ends on December 26, 2026, as does Stephansplatz. Other Advent markets close even earlier. But Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market continues until January 6, 2027, and the winter market at the Prater also runs into the first week of January.

What does that mean for the trip?

If you arrive on December 26, you can still catch several markets. If you arrive on December 29 or January 3, the experience is different: Vienna in winter, with Schönbrunn as the festive highlight.

That still works extremely well. The Hofburg, Belvedere, Kunsthistorisches Museum, historic cafés, concerts and palaces give Vienna the best bad-weather backup of the five cities in this guide.

Choosing an area

Neubau, Mariahilf or Wieden can be better value than the Innere Stadt

You do not need to sleep next to Schönbrunn. The palace is easy to reach by public transport, while a more central base makes the rest of the city much simpler.

Schönbrunn easily fills half a day

This is one of the easiest days to plan in the whole article: visit the palace while there is daylight, then stay on site as the market lights come on. It also avoids crossing the city twice for the same area.

Verdict: Vienna is not the best place to collect several Christmas markets in early January. It may still be the strongest overall city break if you care about museums, architecture and palaces.

4 · Easiest short break

Brussels: an easy option until January 3

Winter Wonders runs from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The event spreads across more than 200 stalls and several central areas, including Grand-Place, Bourse, Sainte-Catherine and Marché aux Poissons.

That gives Brussels a different rhythm from Tallinn. Instead of visiting one market, you keep crossing festive areas as you move through the city.

Why Brussels is so easy for two nights

The centre is walkable, public transport covers the longer gaps and rail can be a better option than flying from many parts of Western Europe. For a December 27–29 break, Brussels therefore needs very little logistics once you arrive.

It also works well if Christmas markets are only part of the trip. Grand-Place, the comic-book murals, Art Nouveau, museums, food and bars make the city feel complete even during the daytime.

Sainte-Catherine puts you right in the middle of Winter Wonders

It is a useful base if you want the festive atmosphere without focusing only on Grand-Place. The historic centre is easiest for a first visit; Sablon is another good option if you prefer a slightly different evening feel.

If you like Belgian chocolate

Brussels is a good place to break up a cold or wet afternoon with something indoors. A chocolate workshop can fit naturally between the daytime sights and a return to Grand-Place or Sainte-Catherine after dark.

Some workshops are short tastings while others let you make pralines, truffles or bars. For a short city break, a central location and sensible duration matter more than choosing the longest format.

December 31: Winter Wonders is scheduled to close at 6 pm that day. It can still be part of the afternoon, but it should not be your New Year's Eve plan.

Verdict: for an uncomplicated two-night break, Brussels is probably the easiest city in this shortlist.

5 · Shortest window

Colmar: excellent from December 26 to 29, much less useful after that

Colmar belongs here because its post-Christmas window is short but genuinely useful. The six traditional Christmas markets are scheduled through December 29, 2026, giving you four full days after Christmas Day.

After December 29, the experience changes. Some winter attractions continue into early January, but the six traditional markets themselves are over. Arriving on December 31 and expecting the same setup would be a mistake.

The best window: December 26, 27, 28 and 29

This is exactly why Colmar earns its place in the guide. If your holiday starts after a family Christmas, you can still catch the full market programme without having to travel before December 25.

Do not assume the Alsace villages use the same dates

Kaysersberg, for example, schedules its 2026 artisan market only on the four Advent weekends, ending on December 20. A December 27 trip can therefore be perfect for Colmar while being too late for some nearby village markets.

Stay within walking distance if you only have two nights

The station area can be a sensible compromise: it keeps train arrival easy while leaving the historic centre within walking distance. If villages are the priority, check transport before deciding where to sleep.

A few Alsace villages can still be worth the detour

If you do not want to rent a car, a day tour can make it much easier to see several villages. After Christmas, just go for the villages themselves rather than assuming every stop will still have an operating market.

How much should you budget for three nights?

Prices around Christmas and New Year change too quickly for a single “average” figure to be useful. These ranges are simply a way to size the trip for one person sharing a room for two, excluding the main journey to the destination.

The useful number is the total trip cost. A cheap flight is not really cheap if it comes with a much more expensive room, awkward airport transfer and paid baggage.
