Keep day one compact. Start at Republic Square, pass Powder Tower and follow Celetná into Old Town. With two full days, keep Old Town on the first and the castle on the second. Add Náměstí Míru before Wenceslas Square if you want a neighbourhood atmosphere; otherwise stay on the central axis and give the saved time to the Jewish Quarter. Do not combine Vyšehrad, the castle, all main markets and several museums in one day: daylight is short, cobbles slow you down and a warm break becomes necessary.

If the flight arrives late afternoon, treat the first evening as a bonus: check in, eat and see the lights. Avoid a fixed activity across town immediately after a low-cost arrival. Delays, baggage reclaim and transfers make that slot fragile.

Where to stay for easy walking without paying the highest premium

Staré Město puts landmarks outside the hotel, but nights cost more and some streets remain noisy. Check soundproofing, taxi access and lift availability: “historic centre” may mean an animated lane or an old building with several flights of stairs. Josefov offers a superb location but is rarely the budget option.

Nové Město is usually the most efficient compromise. Around Náměstí Republiky, Můstek or I. P. Pavlova you retain metro, tram, station access and a direct walk into the centre. Vinohrady suits travellers who prefer neighbourhood restaurants and quieter evenings; stay near a station rather than saving a small amount far out. Malá Strana is romantic, but slopes and cobbles are less appealing with luggage or ice.

Bus, trolleybus, metro and tickets without confusion

Václav Havel Airport has no direct metro. Surface routes connect with metro stations or central Prague depending on the service; Airport Express serves the main station and may follow different fare rules from ordinary city transport. Use the official PID planner for your terminal and landing time, then buy a ticket whose validity covers the full journey.

Walking handles the historic core, but trams protect energy and reduce climbs. Validate a ticket according to its format and keep it for its entire validity. A pass pays only when you use it: three isolated rides do not automatically justify a multi-day product. Funiculars, trains and special services may have separate conditions.

App taxis can simplify a late arrival, but confirm the pickup point and number plate. Do not accept a random solicitation. Leave winter margin on the return: traffic, slippery roads and security queues can add time that a theoretical route ignores.

How much should three Christmas nights in Prague cost?

Prague is no longer automatically cheap during Advent. Accommodation creates the largest difference: a central Saturday booked late can cost twice a weekday in Vinohrady. Markets add repeated small purchases — cup deposits, snacks and souvenirs — that escape a daily total.

For three nights sharing a double room, use a broad planning range of €310–520 per person at the lean end, €520–850 for a balanced trip and more for central upscale lodging, concerts or multiple guided visits. These ranges combine transport, accommodation, food, local movement and two paid sights, but exclude shopping. Recalculate on your own dates.

Pay in Czech koruna when a terminal offers conversion. Check your bank’s rate and fees before travel, and avoid exchange offices whose display makes the final commission hard to understand. The koruna price should remain your reference.

Eating Czech food without making every meal a tourist trap

Try one market speciality for atmosphere, but save main meals for restaurants that display prices, service and portions clearly. Sausages, potatoes, pastries and hot drinks are convenient; they are not the whole Czech kitchen. Look for soup, svíčková, goulash, duck, fried cheese or contemporary vegetarian dishes in places serving customers beyond the tourist flow.

Trdelník has become a tourism symbol rather than an exclusively Prague tradition. Buy one if you enjoy it, but do not use its price or presentation as an authenticity test. A bakery, café or hospoda in Vinohrady can make a more memorable break.

Reserve Friday and Saturday dinner. Check whether service is included and whether water placed on the table is charged. Travellers with allergies should keep a translated explanation and confirm sauces and garnishes: a simple menu label can hide flour, nuts, dairy or alcohol.

Weather and fallback

What if cold or rain breaks the outdoor plan?

December brings short days, damp cold, occasional snow and often just wet cobbles. Use layers, shoes with grip and spare dry socks. A warm coat does not solve soaked feet after an hour.

Build every half-day around shelter: the Jewish Quarter, National Museum, city museums, cafés, churches, galleries or castle interiors. Snow improves photographs but slows trams and makes slopes less safe. Do not book two timed visits linked by a long outdoor crossing.

Families and travellers with limited walking should favour Nové Město, trams and a room with a confirmed lift. Charles Bridge and the castle work best early. Cobbles, steps and historical thresholds remain the main obstacles; ask venues for precise routes rather than relying on a generic accessibility label.

Castle, concert or cruise: what deserves advance booking?

The castle deserves a ticket or tour when you want to understand the complex rather than photograph the courtyard. Read the circuit carefully: cathedral, Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane are not always grouped identically. A guide provides context, but a very long visit removes daylight from Malá Strana.

A concert can create a fine evening if you verify programme, duration, seating and venue. The “classical” label also covers short visitor-oriented performances. A winter cruise provides seated rest and a new perspective; it is secondary when fog hides the banks or the trip lasts only two days.

Ten mistakes that make Prague more expensive and tiring

Booking somewhere merely described as “in Prague” without checking the district is the first mistake. Arriving at Old Town Square at 6pm on a Saturday and deciding every market is unbearable is another. Secondary squares, mornings and late evenings create a very different experience.

Do not exchange money before seeing the final amount, accept dynamic currency conversion automatically or use an unverified taxi. Do not stack the castle, Jewish Quarter and several museums on one day. Avoid buying every meal at market stalls; small purchases can exceed the cost of a proper lunch.

Finally, do not treat the itinerary as immovable. A winter city requires outside and inside blocks to change with weather. The best plan is not the one containing the most pins, but the one that leaves room to walk, warm up and revisit a square when the light improves.
