Europe’s major 2027 carnivals cluster between late January and late February, but they are completely different trips. Venice is about masks and setting, Cologne about street carnival and Rose Monday, Cádiz about satirical songs, Basel about a ritual that starts at 4 a.m., while Tenerife is unusually pushing its main street celebrations into the second half of February.
The real mistake is not choosing the “wrong” carnival. It is booking the wrong weekend, the wrong neighbourhood, or a trip after the signature event has already finished. This guide therefore starts with confirmed 2027 dates, then compares the best window to visit, realistic trip budgets and the most practical areas to stay.

Venice Carnival 2027: the most theatrical, but not the easiest to do cheaply
The Venice Carnival runs from 23 January to 9 February 2027. The full detailed programme is not yet published, but the overall dates are official. The Carnival Official Dinner Show is already confirmed on selected nights from 30 January to 9 February, with rates starting at €650. Treat that as a separate luxury experience, not as a necessary cost of attending the carnival.

For a short trip, 4–9 February is the strongest late-carnival window. Two or three nights are usually enough if you accept that Venice Carnival is less about one single parade and more about the city itself: costumes, masks, squares, bridges and public spaces becoming part of the spectacle.
Where to stay in Venice for Carnival
Cannaregio is a strong compromise between atmosphere and breathing room. Castello works well if you want to stay in Venice while stepping slightly away from the San Marco crush. Mestre can reduce accommodation costs, but returning to the mainland every night removes some of the magic and adds friction to a short carnival trip.
The Carnival Palace - Venice Collection is a particularly sensible fit for this trip: it sits on the Cannaregio Canal just a few metres from the Tre Archi vaporetto stop. You stay in Venice itself, in a calmer setting than San Marco, while keeping straightforward access to the main carnival areas.

The upper end rises quickly for San Marco-area hotels or late bookings. The €650+ official dinner show is not included in this trip budget.
Cologne Carnival 2027: if Rose Monday matters, do not leave on Sunday
Cologne’s street carnival runs from Thursday 4 to Tuesday 9 February 2027. The key date is Rose Monday, 8 February. This is the planning trap: a Friday-to-Sunday city break captures the party but misses the city’s signature Monday parade.
The Altstadt keeps you in the middle of the action, while Südstadt has a strong neighbourhood atmosphere. Deutz is a useful alternative when central west-bank prices jump. Official 2027 grandstand tickets have now gone on sale for the Rose Monday parade and Sunday processions. You do not need one to experience carnival, but a reserved stand is a very different proposition from spending hours in a packed street.
The Motel One Köln-Altstadt at Waidmarkt is a practical carnival base: it is in Altstadt-Süd, close to Severinstraße and the early part of the Rose Monday route, without forcing you to cross back to Deutz after the celebrations.

Cádiz Carnival 2027: one of the strongest atmosphere-to-cost ratios
Cádiz Carnival runs from 4 to 14 February 2027. For a short break, the 6–8 February window is particularly strong: the proclamation on Saturday, the Gran Cabalgata on Sunday 7 February and Lunes de Coros on Monday 8. The COAC final at the Gran Teatro Falla is scheduled for 5 February.

What makes Cádiz different is that the carnival does not depend only on floats. Chirigotas, comparsas, coros and informal street groups turn the historic centre into a constantly changing performance space. La Viña, Plaza de San Antonio, the Mercado Central and surrounding streets are among the areas where the atmosphere is strongest.
Where to stay in Cádiz
For two or three nights, the historic centre or La Viña makes the most sense. Staying further away can save money on paper but adds transport at precisely the hours when you want freedom to wander. The trade-off is noise, so recent hotel reviews matter more than usual during carnival week.

Funchal Carnival 2027: best when carnival is only part of the trip
Madeira’s carnival festivities run from 3 to 14 February 2027. The official calendar places the solidarity and children’s events on 5 February, the main allegorical parade on 6 February and the satirical parade on 9 February. That makes 5–9 February a particularly clean window for combining the carnival with a few winter-sun days in Madeira.

Central Funchal is the logical base if carnival is the priority: the old town, marina and Avenida Arriaga are easy to reach on foot. The Lido is better if the hotel, pool and sea-facing stay matter as much as the parade and you are happy to use local transport.
The Sé Boutique Hotel is one of the most logical addresses for these dates: a few metres from Funchal Cathedral in the city centre, it keeps Avenida Arriaga, the marina and much of the carnival activity within easy walking distance.

Viareggio Carnival 2027: the Italian pick for huge floats
Viareggio has six parades on its seafront circuit in 2027: 30 January, 4, 7, 9, 14 and 20 February. The opening parade on 30 January ends with fireworks, while the 20 February finale includes the winners’ announcement and closing fireworks.
It is unusually easy to budget because ticket prices are already published: admission starts at €16.50, the Thursday 4 February parade starts at €15, a grandstand supplement starts at €25 and Gold tickets start at €70. Unlike Venice, the cost of seeing the headline event is therefore very clear.
Stay between the railway station and the Lungomare. Viareggio is compact enough to work on foot, and a central room is more useful than saving a little money by commuting from Pisa or Lucca after an evening parade.

Binche Carnival 2027: only three days, but a tradition unlike the others
Binche Carnival is confirmed for 7, 8 and 9 February 2027. If you are choosing only one day, protect Tuesday 9 February in your itinerary. The Gilles and Mardi Gras rituals shape the day from very early in the morning.
Binche is less convenient than a major capital precisely because accommodation supply is limited. Book early and prioritise walking distance. A cheaper hotel in another city is not automatically a better deal if late-night trains and special carnival transport do not line up with your plans.

Nice Carnival 2027: the longest window, with detailed events still to come
Nice Carnival 2027, themed “Vive l’Amour”, is scheduled from 9 to 28 February 2027. That is a much wider window than Cologne or Binche and makes Nice useful if your dates are fixed. However, the complete 2027 parade-by-parade timetable and prices are not all published yet.

Carré d’Or / Jean-Médecin is the practical compromise for walking to Place Masséna without necessarily sleeping in the busiest streets of Vieux-Nice. Libération can make sense when the price gap is meaningful and you stay close to the tram.
The Hotel Florence Nice fits this trip well: it is on a quiet pedestrian street just off Avenue Jean Médecin and around a five-minute walk from Place Masséna. For carnival, that is more useful than choosing a seafront hotel that leaves you further from the core parade area.

Basel Carnival 2027: the one where paying for a central hotel can genuinely make sense
Basel Fasnacht runs from 15 to 17 February 2027. The crucial planning detail is the Morgestraich at 4 a.m. on Monday 15 February. This is not an event you want to commute into after breakfast. The night of 14–15 February is part of the experience.
For that reason, Grossbasel / Altstadt or a central part of Kleinbasel can justify a higher room price. There is no general carnival admission ticket. The 2027 Plakette, which supports participating groups, is listed at CHF 10 for copper, CHF 20 for silver, CHF 50 for gold and CHF 100 for the jewellery version.
The Motel One Basel is unusually easy to justify here because it sits directly on Barfüsserplatz. When Morgestraich starts at 4 a.m., being able to step out of the hotel straight into the historic centre has real practical value.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2027: the street carnival is unusually late
This is the easiest date to get wrong. The 2027 programme starts on 22 January, but the main street carnival has been pushed back to 19–28 February for operational reasons. The opening Cabalgata is scheduled for 19 February at 7:30 p.m., and the 19–23 February window already captures several of the biggest street events.
The most important accommodation advice is geographical: if carnival is the reason for the trip, stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, not automatically in Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. The southern resorts are excellent for a beach holiday, but they turn a Santa Cruz carnival trip into a transport problem at the end of the night.
The AC Hotel by Marriott Tenerife on Calle Candelaria is a strong carnival base: it is in central Santa Cruz, facing the marina and within walking distance of the city-centre action. That makes far more sense when carnival is the priority than defaulting to a beach resort in the south of the island.

How much should you budget for a European carnival trip?
The cleanest comparison separates the cost of reaching the destination from the cost once you are there. A €40 flight can disappear as demand builds around an event weekend, while rail fares to Cologne, Basel or Nice depend heavily on where you start.

European carnivals 2027: FAQ
Shrove Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027. Several major European carnivals reach their peak around that date, including Venice, Cologne and Binche.
There is no fixed winner because accommodation changes quickly. Cádiz and Viareggio are relatively easy to control: much of Cádiz’s atmosphere is free in the streets, while Viareggio publishes clear parade admission starting at €16.50.
Tenerife offers the strongest warm-weather proposition, with its main street carnival from 19 to 28 February 2027. Funchal is a very good alternative from 3 to 14 February if you want Madeira scenery around the event.
Book central rooms early for Venice, Binche, Basel and Cologne. The main dates are already known, so waiting for every detailed programme announcement can mean losing the best-located accommodation.
Yes, but the 7–9 February events overlap heavily. A cleaner combination is one carnival around Shrove Tuesday followed by Basel on 15 February, or Tenerife from 19 February onward.
