Madeira’s clouds move quickly across steep terrain. Funchal may remain comfortable while a high walk receives rain or fog. In Malaga, Malta and Sicily, direct sun can warm a sheltered terrace before temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. A windproof layer and a light mid-layer are more useful than packing as though it were August.

Costa Adeje expands the hotel choice, but check the real walk to the coast and a useful stop. A cheaper room uphill can force repeated taxis and erase the saving.

Build five days around two coastal days, a Teide trip, a La Laguna and Santa Cruz day, then one flexible slot for a boat, beach or rest. Do not rent a car solely for Teide if you do not want mountain driving; a clearly defined pickup tour may cost less than rental, fuel, parking and insurance.

3 — Most varied stay

Funchal and Madeira: mild weather, gardens and relief

Funchal combines an old town, gardens, restaurants, buses and many excursions. That density becomes decisive when weather changes: you can move a levada, visit Monte or remain in town without treating a cloudy day as a lost day.

The trap is a room too far uphill or inside an isolated development. A spectacular view does not help when every dinner needs a taxi. Madeira does not promise a warm beach. It offers walking, viewpoints, gardens and food with a mild coast attached. If that definition fits, the island handles uncertainty better than a trip built around one sunbed.

Malta, Malaga, Sicily, Algarve or Cyprus: choose the intent

Marrakech or Agadir when warmth matters more than a European border

In Madeira, stay in Funchal and book the landscape that is genuinely difficult to reach. In Malta, Valletta maximises ferries and walking; Sliema widens accommodation but adds a crossing.

Check the final segment before booking: exact stop, slope, pavement, arrival time and luggage walk. “Eight hundred metres from the centre” may hide a tiring climb or an unpleasant road. On islands, a badly located hotel often costs more than a badly priced flight.

One organised outing is not a failure of car-free travel. It becomes rational when it replaces a full rental and serves a dispersed area. A different tour every day, however, removes the financial advantage. Choose one structural excursion and keep the remaining days independent.

Compare four nights using identical assumptions

Use the same dates, luggage and quality of base. Add airport transfer, local transport, one distant excursion, meaningful admissions and a weather margin. A €45 island flight can finish above a €90 flight to Malaga or Funchal when the room and transfer are wrong.

The ranges assume a shared double room, four nights, mixed meals and one paid activity. Shopping is excluded and the bands are deliberately broad. During school holidays, events or late booking, accommodation becomes the main source of overspend.

Start with a cancellable room in the correct area, then monitor the flight. Do not lock a non-refundable room only because it appears scarce; the saving may not justify a poor flight schedule.
